Bausch & Lomb, known for its PureVision and SofLens brands, is one of the oldest, most well-known, and most prestigious manufacturers of healthcare equipment. It is currently the world's largest manufacturer of eyecare products.
The company started as a small optician's shop in 1853, founded in Rochester, NY, by German-born emigrant John Jacob Bausch. With Henry Lomb's partnership, the shop grew into Bausch & Lomb.
At first the company sold optical devices requiring special accuracy. Later, Bausch & Lomb moved into other types of lens manufacturing, including camera lenses that were used to take the first satellite images of the moon.
In 1971, Bausch & Lomb became the first company to introduce soft contacts. Nowadays the company mainly produces contact lenses, solutions, and surgery equipment, and conducts extensive research to develop new materials and techniques.
Bausch & Lomb currently employs around 14,000 people around the globe. Its products are available in over 100 countries.
