Behind the name CibaVision is Novartis, one of the world's leading healthcare industry companies.
Novartis was conceived in 1996 with the merger of chemical giants Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. At the time, this was the biggest merger in the world. Originally there were three companies: Geigy, founded in 1758; Ciba, founded in 1884; and the "junior" Sandoz, founded in 1886. Ciba and Geigy had already merged in 1970, forming the chemical conglomerate Ciba-Geigy that produced drugs, colors, paint, and glue.
CibaVision started in the U.S. in 1980, when Ciga-Geigy wanted to expand its medical wing.
When Sandoz merged with Ciba-Geigy, CibaVision changed its positioning. In 1987, it became a unit specializing in eyecare within the new Novartis company.
CibaVision has its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia (U.S.). It manufacturers contact lenses and associated products.
CibaVision brought soft contact lenses to the market right from the beginning. It also launched soft "sun contact lenses" that give a pleasant tint to the wearer’s vision.
The company also markets bifocal contact lenses, lenses that change or brighten the eye colour, and lenses that can be used for extended periods of time.
CibaVision products are available in over 70 countries. Brands include AirOptix (O2Optix), Night & Day, Focus Dailies, and Freshlook.
