World's Most Expensive Contact Lenses Have Diamonds

Diamond Contact LensesIndian optometrist Chandrashekhar Chawan, of Shekhar Eye Research Center, has developed contact lenses embedded with gold and diamonds. Designed by Sanjay Shah, these are probably the most expensive contact lenses in the world.

The lenses, not to be inluded in the LensPrices.co.uk price comparison, will cost INR 700,000 (£9,736) per pair. Up to 3,996 pairs will be made.

Dr Chawan said that sales profits will be used to fund treatment of people suffering from Stevens Johson Syndrome, a disease that mostly leads to blindness.

The diamond contact lenses are far from comfortable. Sharp diamonds obviously cannot come in contact with the cornea, so the design is based on rigid scleral contact lenses that are normally used to treat various eye conditions.

Doctor Chandrashekhar Chawan says he was inspired by his wife, who got diamonds planted on her teeth during a visit to the dentist. This made him think and he realized that diamonds were not yet available for the eyes.
