Of course when the year is up and they are supposed to meet again, things don’t go the way they’re supposed to and there are broken hearts on both sides. This book goes back and forth between the past and the present, describing Lili's life in the past and her progression through it to the present day. It was a very passionate book with intense emotions following Lili/Alice’s amnesia but the romance aspect was still very slow burn. Fate decides to play a funny hand when Ben walks into the same restaurant and finds the one that got away.

We flash forward 5 years, Lili has amnesia and shows up in Ben's town 500 miles away and we slowly learn why they never met up. The author has done a fantastic job in writing a storyline that deals with sensitive issues such as domestic violence and coercive and controlling behaviour. After spending two glorious days and one night together, they plan to meet in the same place in one year. In the past we see what happened to Lili after her meeting with Ben didn’t take place and in the present Lili is trying to piece together her life with Ben by her side despite not knowing who he is. This was so powerfully written that Lucas’s narrative crawled under my skin and I don’t think this is a story that I will forget in a hurry.This narrative follows Alice as she attempts to retrace her steps: find her memories to discover what exactly was happening in her life and what made her travel all the way to Scotland. The author’s writing style was complex, multifaceted, an element of mystery, romantic, and just brilliant!

Jumping between timelines is one of my favourite writing styles so I loved that this book was covering multiple timelines at the same time, before they came together at the end.

They make the most of the time that they have together and arrange to meet up a year later, but it never happens. It’s still there now, smoking slightly and occasionally emitting a creaking sigh, like a train that has just pulled into the depot. Ben is the first person to recognise her and tries to help her the best he can without telling her he knows her name. As prior noted very serious issues, including emotional and substance abuse, are covered in this story. Though this story is ultimately one that has hope and second chances at its core, it is well worth reading the author’s content warning at the onset as it deals with very significant issues. This works especially well as it really brings home Alice’s amnesia and the fact that she is so unaware of who she is in the present and therefore has her story told for her, whilst in past we can see Lili’s life unfold in her own words. Never Forget You is an emotional novel that will stay with you long after reading the final hope-filled words that author Fiona Lucas wove into this heartfelt, bittersweet tale. Five years later, Ben still thinks about the amazing woman he met in London and questions how it managed to go so wrong between them. They are the perfect example of soulmates and I would say love at first sight because that’s how I felt it was depicted.I’ve read many books with dual timelines where I’ve spent more minutes than I care to admit trying to piece everything together before the ending.
