Description

This type of gasket will allow you to set the toilet multiple times, unlike wax rings that get smashed once and need to be replaced. They have a special rubber seal that fits onto the bottom of the toilet and then a deep seal flange that goes into the drainpipe sealed by a leak-proof o-ring that prevents splash up and the rotting of the floor flange. Wax-free seals are also a safer bet in climates with temperatures that reach higher than 100 degrees.

It just so happens that they were using the same system I recently installed in my tile floors (Suntouch). Some wax-free toilet seals come with a 10-year guarantee, but most aren’t expected to last as long as wax models. I pulled down the drywall and found that something had leaked but nothing was leaking at the moment. I prefer Terry's method over the Fluidmaster instructions to use that hoaky little cardboard spacer. Most floors aren’t perfectly level, and while using shims helps compensate, the toilet can still shift. It also compensates for an improperly or less than ideal installation of the flange since it has a built-in horn to direct the waste to the drain.

When I removed my old toilet, sure enough, the flange had some rough spots, like the installer caught it with a hacksaw here and there. There are cases where certain fixtures require different seals (as in the case of commercial toilets and urinals, which use different seals than household toilets), so to be safe, check what the manufacturer recommends. We recommend the best products through an independent review process, and advertisers do not influence our picks. I get why someone would when they are dealing with uneven floors, but I probably would only caulk the front half so I could get a visual of any leaks. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. From a service perspective, I've been the lucky guy to financially prosper from horned wax rings or those new fluidmaster waxless adaptors that jar loose during install, and leak. If you need to remove the toilet, you can reuse the wax-free seal as long as it’s still in good condition. If it does rock, I might place two shims at the back, pinning the front of the bowl down to the floor. Wax is also a lot cheaper, and it really doesn't take much time to scrape the wax off, but waxless seals have their conveniences.

Perhaps if we were lucky enough to wait 39 years after it was initially done it would have been easy, but that wasn't the case here.A toilet seal, also known as a tank-to-bowl gasket, forms a semi-flexible seal between the flange (the part in the floor) and the toilet. Fine folks, I'd like to bump this thread and ask about something somewhat separate in regards to the regular wax ring vs. One of our toilets has been removed several times over the years to clear a toy that was flushed by a kid. So wondering if I could avoid the hassle of cleaning the old wax off the toilet when I replace the floor.

They used a lot of neoprene gaskets because the heat wasn't hooked up yet, and wax rings were frozen too hard to install.

If the floor bolts loosen from corrosion or being bumped once too often, that also allows the toilet to move.
