Dapo: It was massively important that these books weren’t preachy. I do think it’s important for kids to be introduced to all the things that are happening in the world from a younger age, in a way that’s accessible to them, in a way that doesn’t scare them, in a way that doesn’t prove to incite anxiety in them in any way at all. Whether it’s writing or illustration that you want to do, it’s important to read, read, read, read, read, read. Read loads and loads of books, read different books, really expand the way that you think. Learn how characters work in a narrative. If they are picture books, you’ll learn how picture books work - you’ll learn there are so many different varieties in picture books, different ways of drawing, different styles that people use. There’s also a degenerative problem that old leather can experience called red rot. You’ll know that’s what you’re dealing with when your venerable leather binding crumbles between your fingers. Cellugel can stabilize a rotten leather cover. Paper Puffin started out as a non-fiction publisher, with its first title appearing in 1940. As the most iconic and well-known children’s book brand in the UK today, we are always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell the world’s favourite stories and for brilliant new debut talent and brands that connect with today’s young readers, from newborn up to twelve years old. Have you been to the seaside? What do you remember? What do you like best about being near the ocean?

Nathan: For writing I would say, I like to try and lead with a character so think of your lead character. Think of some flaws for that lead character. So that character might be really good at this and that but what is the character bad at? Think about what does the character want in the world and what’s stopping that character from getting it? Whatever’s stopping that character from getting is generally the story that you're going to tell and that character might get it in the end or might not, but that’s part of it. Prepare the cleaning space by placing some waxed paper or plain newsprint under the book. This will help catch any mildew spores and prevent them from spreading. This paper will be thrown away.

Want to save more time

If you child has grandparents talk about where they live, are they near or far away? Do you know anyone who lives in Jamaica? What do you know about it? Ask the questions as well. If you go into the bookstore and you don’t see that diversity on the shelf, then ask. It could be that because we are a very polite country, and nobody is asking the question, that the bookshop doesn’t understand that it needs to change what’s on its shelves. From a commercial perspective, it makes sense for bookshops to have more diversity because they would sell more books. It’s not something they would willingly not do if you ask. The familiar and beloved “old book smell” is mostly mildew, which is terrible for your books. If your library of old volumes smells like a library of new volumes, then you’re doing your cleaning job well. If not, it’s time to kill some microorganisms.

When it comes to story and stuff, we’ll bat that around together. I want to make sure that I’m telling a story that he’s interested in and he’s inspired by, and then I would just say that, I am very new - when I first came into this game, I wrote for different kids' TV shows but the picture book realm was very new for me and it was very collaborative and I was learning off Daps. It was just like we were trying to make it right, together, I think. If mildew has already taken hold in a book, isolate the mildewed book in a sealable plastic bag to prevent contamination of other items. Add cornstarch or dry blotters to help dry the book. Excessively wet mildew will smear if you try to remove it. Art gum is your best choice for cleaning cloth covers. You can use Absorbene, too, as well as document cleaning pads as described above. Some resources suggest using a clean cloth with a little fabric softener, but try to avoid exposing your book to chemicals you’re not 100% sure about. If you really, really think you need to get the cloth moist, use almost no water and dry the book thoroughly afterward. Leather The book was released in June 2019, and has garnered plenty of accolades and cult fans, with the momentum never slowing - in fact, debut children's book author Nathan Bryon and illustrator Dapo Adeola are still getting comments from fans as if it was only published last month. In the story an artist makes a sculpture from plastic waste found on the beach. Children could save some plastic containers and make a sculpture from it perhaps shaped like a sea creature like the one in the story. This link might give you some ideas. Make a posterIf the book has a smoky odor, place it in a sealable plastic container with at least one cup of baking soda or activated charcoal. We chatted to Nathan and Dapo about how their books are created collaboratively, the importance of reflecting the world around them to our children and their top tips on how to get into writing and illustrating - if you're a kid. We also got a few of their favourite must-read kids' books - although if you need more to round out your summer reading list, don't miss our article on the best inclusive kids' books, as selected by Round Table Books' Layla Hudson.

A welcome re-publication of Foreman's timeless and evocative account of a boy's relationship with life and death. Interwoven facts and an inspirational surfing grandma add up to a picture book with a lovely balance of urgency, humour and heart." - The Guardian Read more Details This book is truly wonderful with a lovely message. The illustrations are excellent and engaging. Perfect for reading to young children to show them not only that they can make a difference but the importance of looking after the world around them. The Story-Makers Show was known as Puffin Virtually Live up until March 2019. The content and ambition of the show remains the same: to give every pupil the opportunity to engage with authors and illustrators in their own classroom using the power of the internet. I loved this book! Also, my niece and I did an absolutely adorable 4 minute YouTube book review which you can view below! It's literary the sweetest!

My grandparents are the best. They run whale-watching tours and have an animal sanctuary behind their house. Published by Puffin Books, this is a heart-warming, timely and empowering picture book, showing how we ALL can make a difference. Dapo: One of the first things that we were keen on doing was taking her abroad in this book. It's not a specific Caribbean island. What I ended up doing was drawing references from different islands that I’ve come across visually and asking friends of mine to send pictures of their islands so that I could find little bits and pieces to take and put into this second book... it's what an island in the Caribbean would look like and the problems that several islands in the Caribbean have at the moment with pollution.
