Gold-/Platin-Datenbank (Within Temptation; 'The Unforgiving ')" (in German). Bundesverband Musikindustrie . Retrieved 10 December 2022. Kerrang! were more negative, giving it a "good" score of just 3 out of 5 and deeming it "pretty unsatisfying", while conceding it to be "flawless and expertly crafted". [33] Q gave it just 1 out of 5, the album's lowest rating, labelling the band "the metal T'Pau". [35] Oficjalna lista sprzedaży:: OLiS - Official Retail Sales Chart". OLiS. There is a certain malleability to metal, appropriate primarily since many metal substances carry this trait in a material sense, but often taken for granted and often times dismissed as being too heavily bent towards eclectic influences. But regardless of dueling orthodoxies, it is pretty well established that the limits of the genre are drawn less by any conventional wisdom, but more so by those in the mind of the creator. Within Temptation sought to expand their own boundaries while walking a clear tightrope musically, trying to balance a fairly different direction with the symphonic underpinnings of their established sound.

I apologise for the very low rating, but I truly feel extremely disappointed with this album. This is a totally unforgiving release from all perspectives! I always knew and felt that Within Temptation were a creative and promising band with some good and innovating ideas. Even though I don't adore any of their albums, I think that every output they have released has a special and unique flow and a couple of addicting, inspiring and catchy songs. Now the band decided to work on a conceptual album based on a comic book. The interesting artwork, the great booklet and several well done short films complete the ambitious musical project and are really promising. I understand that long time fans are a bit put off by what is apparently a departure from their usual sound, but they departed to somewhere far better, like someone moving out of Detroit. You can hardly blame them. It's just that with watershed albums, which The Unforgiving surely is, you always end up with two camps of fans. There's the How Dare You Change crowd of existing fans who like what the band did on day 1 and just want them to do that forever, and there's the As Long As It's Good fans who just like the music and don't particularly care if it stylistically matches any previous output. I have been on both sides with one band or another, so I know how it goes.

We told him what kind of movies we liked, what kind of books we read, and he thought about it and he came up with a basic idea, like 2 or 3 lines. The story is about people who have done bad things. Not because they are bad, but because they made bad decisions." a b Prato, Greg (25 March 2011). "Allmusic review- 'The Unforgiving' ". AllMusic . Retrieved 25 March 2011. It doesn't have the power of the operatic vocals found on other releases. It is just plain and pop sounding. The music is unfocused, generic, and ultimately forgettable. Gone are the Gothic nuances and orchestral bombast found on previous Within Temptation releases. In their place we find generic euro-pop metal. The guitars crank out unmemorable riffs that are nothing spectacular and the bass is not quite here. Of course, this genre never had the best drummers and this band is no exception. You won't find anything awe-inspiring musically here except maybe a few melodic riffs here and there. What a solid release despite the critics. But hey! I'm considered a critic myself. I think "Shot in the Dark" is their most pivotal song on this entire album! But the music on here is catchy and anything but brutal. I'm not a huge fan of alternative metal. But I do dig Lacuna Coil though Within Temptation is pretty much all clean vocals. I like that better actually, especially the clean female vocals like on Epica's albums where Simone sings. Cristina Scabbia is also a great vocalist for Lacuna Coil. I think this band has been around and a lot of discography behind them. Definitely a solid band to change it up from the brutal stuff that I like.

Following the formation of the initial ideas, O'Connell completed the rest of the story with additional suggestions from the band. For example, Sinéad was initially a South American woman named Maya, but, as the music to " Sinéad" had already been completed, Sharon requested that the name and nationality be changed. [4] While shooting the three short films and music videos, Mother Maiden (" Faster"), Sinéad and Triplets ("Shot in the Dark"), the band and director (Joeri Holsheimer) came up with several other ideas, among them which song would connect to which story. The band's decision to shoot three short films was mostly to avoid the restrictions imposed on music videos, as Sharon explained: [4] On 3 February 2011, the first English review of the album was published by a freelance journalist online via last.fm and his blog. [17] [18] Still in February, members of Within Temptation were in Paris to promote their new album in France. A first French interview with Sharon Den Adel was published on Metal-Ways.com (in English). [4] The band first announced that they intended to make a new album in October 2008, as they were finishing touring in support of The Heart of Everything. [10] The album was originally planned to be recorded in 2009, but was further delayed by vocalist Sharon den Adel giving birth to her and guitarist Robert Westerholt's second child. In an interview with Metal Ways at Appelpop 2008, Westerholt stated that the new album was "probably going to be kind of a concept, but it's so early still that nothing is really sure yet. But we're trying to look in that direction." [11] What happened was that we wanted to write lyrics for a movie. We were searching for a good movie with a good story and everybody had different release dates. If something goes wrong, a movie can very easily be postponed for a year, and we couldn't take the chance to have to wait for that, otherwise we would have had to postpone our album as well. So we decided to take the matter in our own hands." we wanted to put all the money into the movies. You have a budget and then you have to make choices and, to be honest, MTV and everything, it is not so big anymore. And when you make videos, they always say "you can't use blood, you can't use guns, you can't use..." and we wanted to use everything: blood, guns... everything!" As part of transmedia project [ edit ]Within Temptation" still knows how to make it dramatic and theatrical, the intro to "Faster" sounds like a song on a preview for an action movie, and the intro to "Murder" sounds like a song that would be on a preview for a thriller movie. Even in Sinead" the one song on this album that sounds like it would be played at a dance party has a symphonic theatrical incline that makes you feel like that you're still listening to "Within Temptation" no matter how different it is. On 22 September 2011, the band performed "Where Is the Edge" and "Lost" at the première of Me and Mr Jones on Natalee Island during the 31st Netherlands Film Festival, where the three The Unforgiving short-films were screened.
