The Volvo suddenly rattled hard. Was something falling apart? The bumper? Part of the undercarriage? The engine itself? I couldn’t see the speedometer, but I was certain that nobody had ever gone this fast in the Volvo for a very long time. The ancient car maxed out at fifty-five on a good day—and we were going much faster than that on the downhill now. I couldn’t tell if Deep Voice was pleased or upset by the discovery that there was no blood in the Volvo. My skin crawled with anger as I remembered the feel of his hands in my hair, grabbing and tearing. Laura leaned next to my ear as if to whisper, but when the men spoke again, she froze. Disclaimer: maybe everyone else will find this to be vanilla and not edge of your seat so don’t take my sole word as gospel HOWEVER I personally was captivated by the chase, the tension and the terror. If you are a fan of Sara Ennis and her Dollhouse series this one might be for you - the writing style is very similar and it just felt so easy to read. I looked at her in disbelief. “If I see a damn mouse come out of your dashboard, I am hurling myself out of the Volvo.” I shuddered. “I still can’t believe Tish spent money on this thing. It’s amazing that it runs.” The Volvo’s bumper hit the hillside with a loud thunk, but Laura didn’t hesitate as she yanked the steering wheel and shifted gears.

Red Mask grabbed the passenger door’s handle. He shook it roughly, but it didn’t budge. Despite my terror, I felt a surge of love for the Volvo. The passenger door handle had completely stopped working soon after Tish bought it from Tony’s friend. It didn’t open from the outside or the inside. You either had to crawl through the window or the driver’s side. And the ending was so abrupt (this is the best word to describe it), but I loved the way in which it was written. The abruptness isn't by any means a bad thing, I enjoyed being hit head on with what had happened. I’d seen plenty of photos of Tish’s boyfriend—briefly fiancé—on Facebook, but I’d only really met him a couple of times. Once across the room at a party, and once on the apartment couch in passing. We didn’t actually know each other. Not really.

It took a second for me to register what I was seeing: not human skin, but latex masks. It didn’t temper the white-hot fear pumping through my veins.

A bunch of drunk college students, came the easy answer. Nobody would bat an eye if Laura and I didn’t show up tonight. The action starts fairly fast in this book with Olivia and her friend Laura driving to a bonfire party being held outside city limits. It preys on a fear many women have—being followed by a car in the middle of nowhere at night. At first you can’t tell if the car is following you with malicious intent or if they just happen to be going to the same place as you. After a few minutes and turns, you ask yourself if you should call the police or if you’re overreacting. And then if the person or people in the car behind you are out to harm you, will you be able to either outsmart them or overpower them? WOW!!! I will be honest (as I always am) I was expecting this to let me down hard. I loved the sound of it but I thought, yep I’ll get approved and it will be dud city!!! Was I wrong about that!!! This book kept me up late, made me tired for work and I felt like my entire body was poised ready to pounce at every turn. I couldn’t see. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t hear Laura’s screams anymore—just the sound of air rushing through the open window and the vehicle itself banging and squealing, moving faster and faster downhill. Why would I hate you?” I asked incredulously, pausing my search for the phone to glance behind us, scanning the shadowy hills for any sign of approaching headlights. There was nothing.

I wound my cold hands into the soft underside of the halter top, keeping my gaze on the shoulder of the road to watch for more pairs of ghostly eyes. “Are you sure we took the right turnoff?” Ziggy,” which I now knew was short for “Zachariah,” was the supremely awkward humanities TA who stared at me during class. Laura and I had found his Facebook profile one night and learned, to our horror and delight, that he was a member of the Pen and Quill Society: a LARPing group on campus. Ziggy was a “mage”: which Laura and I had to Google. It meant he was some kind of magician. The brights behind us blazed into full view, and Laura floored the gas again. “Keep redialing,” she prompted, shifting the Volvo into second gear. The lesson you get at the end of a novel can vary widely depending on the book you read. Some novels are explicitly designed to teach a specific lesson, while others may leave the interpretation up to the reader.Laura let go of the wheel with one hand to rap on the plastic of the dash. The sound stopped. “I think there might be something living in that hole, gnawing on the wires,” she said, then shrugged as if she’d just made a comment about the weather. “Sometimes I hear that same scurrying sound while I drive. Tish said she does too. It’s probably a mouse.” Thank you to Dynamite Books, LLC and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

I forced myself to draw slow breaths while my heart hammered in my chest. Every few seconds, I looked over my shoulder to stare blindly into the night. Laura’s breathing was ragged in my ears, but the closer we got to the riverbank, the more difficult it would be to hear any noise we made over the rush of the water. Laura and her best friend, Olivia (Liv), are off to a bonfire party one night. Liv, always a worrier, didn’t want to go, but eventually she gave in. She knew she’d be cold and miserable all night in her short dress and cute shoes, but she had no idea how accurate that premonition would end up being! She smiled and tapped on the brakes as a deer’s eyes glowed white near the side of the road before it bounded into the night. “Stop it right now. I keep telling you, it’s gorgeous. And it makes your eyes look huge.” She reached up to grab a hunk of her blond hair. “Mine feels like straw lately—how do you get yours so shiny?” I refocused my attention on the rise and fall of Laura’s chest, desperately wishing she could help me think through our options. Thankfully, the acrid smell I’d detected earlier had all but disappeared. The ancient Volvo felt like our safe haven again. My phone screen showed one service bar. I didn’t have any new messages, but I took the opportunity to text Tish the car’s license plate: 2C GR275. Just in case. The bonfire at the reservoir had started more than an hour ago, and as far as I could tell we were the only car on the road—aside from the tailgaters. Laura had waited until my shift ended at the Pie Hole to make the tedious, winding drive through the hills. It was so hyped up and drawn out on why they had kidnapped them, it was such a let down to find out why, I literally almost stopped reading it.
