I’ve never heard of the Maccabee’s but as Felix and I both share a love of cricket, guitars and loud rock music I put his book on my to read list. A lovely guy - and this is a beautiful book which describes the consequences of losing a parent painfully well. His debut book, ‘It’s Always Summer Somewhere’, a memoir on a life lived through the love of cricket and music while processing young grief, is a Sunday Times Bestseller and has received widespread praise and plaudits from revered names across the arts and sports worlds, including Stephen Fry, Pete Paphides and Toby Jones.

It was an uphill struggle to carve their name in the history of Liverpool music, but Echo and the Bunnymen became iconic, with songs like ‘Lips Like Sugar,’ ‘The Cutter’ and ‘The Killing Moon’.

I’ve never written a book review before, but felt compelled to do so for Felix White’s wonderful autobiographical book. This is a moving and funny account about the highs and lows of growing up, slowly replacing an ambition to be a left arm spinner in his school team with the dazzling realities of being a guitarist in world renowned band. com/ All I need is to be careful and correlate different data based on their situation in the current season. A few bits snagged and hooked me: his reflections on 90s and early 00s cricket which I can’t remember, his description of his relationship with Florence Welch. I should have realised after trying 'The Tailenders' Podcast and finding it extremely irritating that this just wasn't going to be the book for me.

I loved the way that the intertwining aspects of the book came together - the rise and the end of The Maccabees, England men’s cricket team winning the World Cup, and the more personal aspects of White’s life. Not only is this book well written, poetic and captivating, with its threads running between subjects and moments in time that intertwine in a beautiful way, it is also deeply personal and heartfelt. Neither of his parents - from Lebanon and the Isle of Wight - were into the game, so it is a slight mystery to everyone that he took to it as much as he did. A deeply moving book on both the large and the small of life, and how each is used to help survive the other. With unprecedented access to the artist’s entire archive, The Quentin Blake Book reveals the stories behind some of Blake’s most famous creations, while also providing readers with an intimate insight into the unceasing creativity of this remarkable artist.

Articulate, intensely personal at times and a beautiful reflection of life’s trials, tribulations and personal neuroses. A beautifully written book, ostensibly about cricket and music (you really do need to love cricket to read this) but really about death and grief and moving on.

It’s insightful, and beautifully written, and that well-quoted line from Wandavision really came to mind when reading it. His passion for the game is at the fore on the BBC ‘s number one cricket podcast and 5Live show, Tailenders, which he co-presents with Greg James and Jimmy Anderson. The way it was written made me smile, I found myself reading sentences again just to let the words sink in.

He does this through his total immersion in his two passions, one of which he watches from afar and through the other, he forms a band.
