Description

I think the biggest problem here is that you just don't care about any of the characters, or what happens to them. Yes Mr Weaver draws some idea's from the "character traits for crime novels" standard list but mostly David is his own man. It might not have much creepiness, but it has a lot of great suspense and mystery, coupled with action.

I am glad that David managed to escape every time he was almost killed, but it started to get on my nerves and the whole "OMG" and "THANKS GOD HE DID IT AGAIN" became less credible. I purchased this book almost in desperation after finding the last two or three novels I read quite disappointing. It starts off just like a typical mystery-suspense novel, but soon turns into a relentless, unputdownable supernatural thriller. It started off by giving a little background of the natator by telling what she does for a living and you learn a lot about the internal feelings of the narrator as the story continues. Its potential - there are some interesting ideas - never fully develops and ends up lost among plot holes, inconsistencies, and the completely inexplicable.

The "ordinary man in an extraordinary situation" template is all very well, but Raker is so distractingly polite and well balanced, it's hard to believe he has it in him to do as the novel requires and turn vigilante. Joe Schreiber was born in Michigan but spent his formative years in Alaska, Wyoming and northern California. Susan knew that if she didn’t fallow the rules that this “man” was giving her she would never see Veda again, alive. The change is wonderfully done, finally giving you a protagonist who is entirely human, and yet, heroic in his own way.But still, I found the second part of the book a bit too much: there were just TOO MANY life-threatening situations for one person in one book. You get to feel him grow and change as the story progresses and the slow reveal of his history adds to the suspense of the book. Came to this first book of the David Raker series immediately after reading the fourth, 'Never Coming Back', which I thought was fabulous and gripping. Initially it had the power to engross, but as the story went on it became a dire farce and totally ridiculous in its crafting. No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins.
