The 12 year was one of the first few bottles to be part of my stash when I had just started building my collection, nearly a decade ago. The nose starts out all wood smoke, but if you hang around long enough there is a quick acid bite followed by a sweetness, like biting into a mandarin orange. Its affordability plus age, at 16 years old, is ( was, in our case) very attractive for beginners who usually look at age statements first.

There are also some very good independent bottlings out there - Douglas Laing's 14 year old single cask in particular. It makes me crave a salty ocean, sea spray, and the rugged nature of the terroir of the land it comes from. It's like a person with a whole list of achievements, lots of diplomas, awards, but with no charm or character. The distillery is located near Port Askaig at the North of Islay, overlooking the cove and the Paps of southern Jura. There just wasn’t really much going on, nor any particular profile development over and above the 12, aside from being a bit smoother. After reading this, I put the 2 ( Talisker 10, Caol Ila 12) together, but it didn't turn out well for me. Delicate and light on the palate with toffee and vanilla notes balanced with gentle smoke and tar notes on the finish.I find both Talisker and Lagavulin to be more “elegant” than Laphroaig or Ardbeg, which are a punch in the face as far as Islays are concerned. With stunning views from the still house across the Sound of Islay, Caol Ila 12 year old is Islay's hidden malt, lighter and more subtle than other Islay whiskies with a malt smokiness that makes it highly prized by connoisseurs. The only CS I have seen in Ontario is 17 YO unpeated, and I have to say it's pretty impressive, but the only reason I got it was because I traded in a bottle someone brought for me by accident that was worth a lot more than I would ever pay for a bottle. Fresh, sweetly fruity and smooth-bodied, Caol Ila 12 year old is the colour of pale straw, with a delicate balance of tastes.
