About this deal

Cons: Sensitive to plosives; heavy weight requires a sturdy stand; cardioid pattern may not be tight enough for some applications.

The Earthworks SR314 is a vocal microphone suited to all ranges of voice recording and performance and is ideally suited to stage, recording, broadcast, podcasting and voiceovers. I see no other reason for the hiss that happens in either a power amp plugged into a passive speaker, or an active speaker when turned up, even though the input is at line-level, and either nothing is plugged into it, or a perfectly-working XLR cable is plugged from the input to a mixer that is turned off. The rejection of sources at 180 degrees is superb, and it still offers a reasonably wide sweet spot to allow the vocalist a good range of movement without drastic changes in sound quality. It’s a welcome and inviting sound that allows me to add some body to my tenor voice without losing the EW window of clarity. The SR314 features a distinct, tapered housing with a brushed-silver finish that somehow makes it look retro and contemporary at the same time (the microphone is also available in a black finish with stainless screens, or black finish with black screens).

and i stand correct that hiss is either coming from the source, mic, preamp, mis-use of processing or from level mis-match between gear in the analog domain (which may happen at the very last stage though): the amps then only make it louder. Or when you just want a set-and-forget mic, since it's more balanced than the Audix mics without EQ. The first of these was the SR40V, a back-electret stage vocal mic that was reviewed back in SOS December 2011. The mic performed beautifully capturing everything from the smaller intimate moments to the big rocking high energy moments of the set.You should note that the pickup pattern of this mic is very tight which will require the singer to stay on axis for consistent performance and as such it is not the best microphone for ambient duty in my opinion. The SR314’s tight cardioid polar pattern provides consistent frequency response to 90º off-axis, with extreme attenuation of off-axis sound sources beyond 90º and maximum rejection at 180º. Well, the next day when using it at home, it worked fine for about 30 minutes before it suddenly got muffled sounding. Finding a non-drunk or stoned UK sound man that does his job properly is hard enough - about one out of ten gigs I'd be anywhere close to being satisfied with the sound. Its microphones notoriously reproduce clean, crisp, and accurate sound with an ultra-fast transient response, extended frequency range, and very low noise.
