About this deal

Thoroughly entertaining fantasy about two brothers plunged into a war between a nation of obese pleasure-seekers (the Fattypuffs) and a country of skinny grumps (the Thinifers).

Terry also rises through the ranks quickly in the land of the Thinifers, workaholics all, who scarcely eat, and who rush to and from their country, which is all high, sharp spires and thin railway cars. Very sadly she did not survive many years into my life and the flow of wonderful books, at least from that source, dried up all too soon. And it took a war as well as a lot of argument before the boys could teach them to agree about anything. Edmund soon assumes an important position in the administration of Fattypuff, whose inhabitants are friendly, happy, and who live only for drinking and eating. When my elderly friend commented on some neighbours of ours, many years ago, as ‘fattypuffs and thinifers, I thought he’d just made it up.

The story shows us how each of the boys is forced to adapt to the culture that has accepted him based purely on his body size and weight. For centuries Fattypuffs and Thinifers have been mortal enemies, having fought one another already in the War of the Captive Armies.

It has all the elements of a true childrens classic: humour; surrealism; grand adventures; and just enough of a moral. I remember distinctly this being one of the first books I'd set myself to read back when I was a little kid. Ultimately the two nations found at the bottom of an enormous escalator (one of fat people and the other of thin people) have to learn the art of compromise to live peacefully together. Discover timeless favourites from The Jungle Book and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland to modern classics such as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. A children’s fantasy first published in 1930, this book tells of two brothers, the thin Terry and the plump Edward, who descend into an underground world.

I loved this book as a child, and for some reason I was thinking about it tonight so I looked it up on Goodreads. Although I understand that a copy of the first English edition of this book is now rare and somewhat valuable, even without a dust wrapper, the book in my hands at the moment is, quite simply, one of my absolute favourites from a very early point in my life. A fat boy and a thin boy, brothers, go into the countryside one day and find a gap between two rocks which they climb into and find a moving staircase that takes them deep into the earth. If you are a parent/adult fretting about a girl who is only 10 but who reads Cosmo during morning "playtime" and can quote Bridget Jones/Marian Keyes/Sophie Kinsella verbatim and who is already talking about diets and thighmasters at age 7, then I would read this.

I came across it at school, perhaps it sticks in the mind because of how thorough going the fantasy is.These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. There, two opposing nations – one fat, fun-loving and easy-going, the other thin, acerbic, and disciplinarian – make war on one another.
