He went to art school in Liverpool and has since worked as a typographer for design and advertising agencies. Yet whilst this book is unlikely to dispel any dentist fears, there's enough humour in the mix to prevent it becoming too terrifying for the majority of young readers.

Subsequently, have bought most of the DW books for the kids and see them reading the books repeatedly, which has been a good diversion from being hooked onto gadgets. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. It follows in the vein of Roald Dahl stories, with delightfully quirky illustrations (in the Kindle version, at least), to accompany the at-times alarming story of 12-year old Alfie. I'm not rudely dissagreeing with the reviewer, but personally this book is sutable for children over 7, as littler children get more scared, including that there is some words they won't get.In 2008 David’s first children’s book The Boy in the Dress was published, illustrated by Quentin Blake. Alfie and Gabz are determined to get to the bottom of the mystery - but no-one could have dreamed what they'll discover when they come face to face with the demon dentist herself, in this hilarious and thrilling story!

It is up to Alfie and fellow outcast, the tiny girl with straggly hair and sardonic wit, Gabz, to save the day. Children are leaving their teeth for the tooth fairy and waking up to find odd things under their pillows! His books have now been translated into 40+ languages, and also include picture books illustrated by Tony Ross. He wears uniforms with holes and he is not exactly Mr Popular in school, and understandably, he has a morbid fear of dentists arising from a traumatic experience when he was six. This last detail is the basis of the story and it may seem like an inconsequential nugget, but the brilliance of Williams's storycraft is how he manages to create a comedic situation from the rather dire circumstances of Alfie's life by focusing on this one area.

Also at the point when the witch removed her too white to be real teeth to reveal hideous fangs which had blood. Initially I had bought a few of the David Walliams books for my son as was recommended in the school read list. Having started from humble origins, Joe’s father is now a billionaire, and Joe has everything he wants, except true friends. It is in the company of frustratingly ineffective adults and truly perilous situations that Alfie shines in this delightful yet disturbing book.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. He took up swimming in his youth because he was overweight, and has subsequently completed long distance swims of the English Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar and the River Thames, raising millions of pounds for charity! There's also surprises; I thought for a long time that the social worker was in league with Miss Root! in the children's chart and sold over half a million copies in less than a year, while the PBs of his previous titles dominate the UK charts. So I decided to read his book and I wanna say what I said a million times(probably not) in this review. The book is littered with a colourful cast of characters, from Winnie the large, meddlesome social worker who has a penchant for loud clothing and romps around in a too-small moped; Raj, the neighbourhood newsagent with a timid heart of gold, and the totally guileless policeman, PC Plank. The characters are well-drawn, in particular hero Alife, who is also a carer for his disabled dad, and the terrible villain really is truly demonic.

The David Williams books are exciting and engaging and never fails to impress with the brilliant content and illustrations. We use cookies to personalise content and ads, to provide social media features and to analyse our traffic. Even the characters that played a very small part had marked differences from each other and seemed real!
