Mais de mil anos antes de Cristo, na orla da extremidade oriental do Mediterrâneo, havia uma grande cidade muito rica e poderosa, sem rival à superfície da Terra.

Yet it would be unfair not to consider it perfect for what it does, which explains that it continues to sell 80 years after its first publication: how many books can boast such an achievement? Through the first quarter of the twentieth century she was the headmistress of the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore. You got to be kidding, I remember the basics and it has already helped in my classic reads when these figures show up and if my memory fails, I can look here as a reference. So you cover stories and characters from a number of the most important texts that remain of Greek and Roman mythology (ie.Hamilton's education continued at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut, and at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from which she graduated in 1894 with an M. A little naive maybe, however, given this and the irrevocably atrocious acts of each and every member of the Greek Pantheon, I suggest that there are, in fact, no Gods in Greek Mythology, only reflections of vastly more powerful versions of ourselves, unmasking and exposing all of our most unfavourable attributes. It was also interesting to note how our thought (in the western world via Europe) has developed in a line pretty clearly from the ancient Greeks. A great introduction to greek and roman mythology with reasoning behind why she decided to include (or not include) every section and story.

Francisco de Goya, Saturn Devouring His Son, in which the titan Saturn eats all his children so that they won't be the death of him. What I’m not sure about is if I would have found this easy to read when I knew a very tiny amount about Greek and Roman Mythology and Norse Mythology. However, I really need to point this out again: this is supposed to be a comprehensive work of mythology as a whole! I like to bring other sources (the main one being Gods and Heroes by Korwin Briggs) to class to do a bit of a show ‘n’ tell and I also love inundating my students with suggested viewing and reading related to our current studies. There was something that really needled at me while I was reading that I don’t remember from high school. Easy to find online references for individual myths, often more thorough, but Hamilton and Bullfinch were the books we had kicking around the house in childhood, pulling the stories together.

Concerning how you approach it, is up to you but I will say this will be a valuable novel before heading towards Homer’s work. But I think that none of those girls exhibit wisdom, reason and chastity that are the virtues of the goddess their place of work was named after. In fact, I’ll just come out and say it, if you read the dull little paperback version, you’re an inferior human being, it is what it is.This 75th anniversary edition of a classic bestseller is stunningly illustrated and designed to enchant fans of Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology at all ages. My copy of Odyssey (translated by Samuel Butler) does use archaic language and I can live with that. Bulfinch's cuts and changes to myths which accounts for the low rating (if there was a half-star rating system here, it would get more than Bulfinch's Mythology but as it is . So, as is always true when an author is telling and not showing, it’s a bit dry, especially concerning the subject matter (though she does reserve the right to occasionally be sarcastic or even humorous).

This is an ambitious work, which Edith Hamilton brings to life Greek and Roman Mythology (mainly and Norse partly), being a keystone of Western Culture. Hector’s young Son, Astyanax and Hecuba’s daughter, Polyxena are murdered after the defeat of Troy, Tantalus kills his own son and feeds him to the Gods, Atreus feeds his brother his own children… you get the point!I was happy to have the recommendation of Edith Hamilton's Mythology from my Goodreads friend, Beverly about a year ago, when I was looking for a book that would help me understand this subject better. She regarded as the high point of her life a 1957 ceremony in which King Paul of Greece named her an honorary citizen of Athens. It is not necessarily that the language is archaic because it isn't but it sometimes does not flow well. There are a ton of stories here so just pace yourself and don’t overwhelm yourself as there are a lot of names. This book taught me that Troy was a city and Brad Pitt's name in the movie should have been Achilles.
