Her keen eye for the idiosyncrasies of Lagosian culture, combined with his clever wordplay, ensures that every page delivers a punchline. Could not for the life of me push through this book, way too many sex scenes that are completely unnecessary, random and forced. Almost two years later, Ugochukwu Ugonna’s ‘Who Drove Nearly All the Men in Lagos Mad’ hits the market. From cheating husbands, a mommy's boy, an impotent husband, a side chick, to closeted gay husbands, and many more.

The thrills and suspense, especially the cliff hanger endings of some of the stories had me putting the book away every now and then just so I can chew on what I just read. The stories are good (at least the ones I read) and the title definitely catchy but the fact that I wasn't warned about its sexual graphic/descriptive content still my biggest issue. The final story had me in my feelings though and men like Charles in Independence Day deserve to be in a dark place they can never come out of for the trauma they cause. I also found it amusing how you can pretty much replace Lagos with Lilongwe and the message remains the same. Undoubtedly these characters represent some real life bad actors but the humor and sharp wit and downright absurdity of this collection raises it to four stars. With these stories set within Lagos, the author employs a lot of complex sentences and overly sexual content to prove his point.

I wished some of the stories had more depth to them but overall I would recommend this to anyone who is in a reading rut and looking for a good laugh! The stereotype of pointing fingers at the woman as being responsible for infertility in marriages finds its way into this novel as well. The men in this book are liars, cheats, scammers, and largely undeserving of the women in their lives. They are just a reminder of how morally decadent we have allowed ourselves to be; we wallow in a quagmire, splashing mud all around, without first wondering when solid ground became sinking sand. Her debut collection of stories, Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad, became a runaway bestseller in Africa upon its release in 2021, and was named the bestselling fiction title of 2022 in Nigeria, with international editions following in the UK (Swift Press), US (HarperVia) and Germany (Peter Hammer Verlag). Nearly All the Men in Lagos Are Mad is a collection of twelve short stories featuring characters with unique voices and stories that represent the diverse class, gender and ethnic melting pot that is Lagos. A girl who drugs men to steal from them, a supposed virgin who cheats on her boyfriend with other men, a woman who hates her son and husband, and a Lagos big girl who cheats on her boyfriend with a ‘Yahoo boy’ who ends up cheating on her. Anyone who could keep a white shirt clean at the end of the day in Lagos deserved a standing ovation.
