About this deal

The cold weather has subsided, and the days are getting longer, so you can expect your veg plot to really start coming into its own this month. Once the lettuce plants have sprouted and are about 2 inches tall, thin them out, so they are spaced about 6-8 inches apart. We have found that it is best to tear the paper into really small pieces — roughly 1-2 cm wide — so that the seedlings are not too far from the light. Some of the plants need to be pricked out and others can be planted directly in a garden bed or plant pot.

To munch on a piquant salad leaf or juicy tomato that was, minutes before, basking in the sunshine is without compare, both in terms of taste and sustainable living. This year we focus on the wonders of the kitchen garden, growing a polyculture of plants to create a living space that is edible, useful and beautiful. June is a great time to plant out your veg crops and start harvesting some of the early spring vegetables.Once your leeks have grown to around 6-8 inches, you should relocate them to their maturing position. This illustrated wall planner is a map of verious folk traditions of the Northern Hemispher (predominatly from the UK where myself and Frances are based) and a seasonal ecological gardening guide, with additional foraging tips throughout. The So You Think You Can Plant bundle is perfect for people who want to share a unique gardening experience with a mate. You can still continue sowing those spring vegetables that you may have missed out on earlier in the season. Our seed calendar also makes a great sustainable gift idea for gardening enthusiasts or complete newbies.

Climbers can also benefit each other – sweet peas, for example, attract pollinating insects, which pollinate French or runner bean flowers. I use it in conjunction with the online planner from Garden Focussed because it makes good bedtime reading. You’ll receive a second Back to the Roots calendar, so you can learn the ropes together and challenge each other! Keep the pot moist – you can do this by covering it with glass or foil – and water the seedlings as needed. For example, if you have pulled seeds from the plants again and would like to sow them in the following year, you can refer to the planting instructions again for guidance.

Providing it’s well drained and not too compact, there is no reason why your leeks shouldn’t flourish. Don’t forget: Peas need plenty of water, a good soaking twice a week, especially in dry periods, and mulch, mulch, mulch! Being higher off the ground, they’re a doddle to weed, and garden pests such as pigeons and rabbits tend to leave them alone.
