I had read about 20% of the book when I watched the film. I’m so glad I saw the film first! Something that was peppered throughout the text, that readers will piece together in bits slowly, was turned into a final reveal at the end of the movie. The film version of this was clever and had me saying, “ah, ha, that’s what was going on!”

Elmore Leonard archive goes to South Carolina". October 15, 2014. Archived from the original on November 15, 2020 . Retrieved November 27, 2014.Chili becomes Linda Moon’s manager, stealing her from Raji who, in turn, sends Joe Loop to kill Chili. But the Russian mob (who had hired Joe to kill Tommy) has also sent a shooter to kill Chili at his house because they think he could connect them to Joe as Tommy’s killer. When Joe walks into Chili’s house to kill him, the Russian is there waiting in the dark for Chili. Mistaking the Russian for Chili, Joe kills the Russian. So now the Russians will double up on Chile, as will Raji. It’s a Keystone Cops of homicide! Rzepka, Charles (2013). Being Cool: The Work of Elmore Leonard . Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. p.21. ISBN 9781421410159. Quentin Tarantino has optioned the right to adapt Leonard's novel Forty Lashes Less One (1972). ( May 2010) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) After being seduced by Doris, Harry drunkenly calls Bones, insults him, and asks for another investment; he also reveals that Chili has Leo's money. Bones flies to Los Angeles and brutally beats Harry. When Ronnie interrupts them, Bones shoots him dead and plants the gun on Harry. Bear has a change of heart about the plan to kill Chili, but Bo threatens him and his young daughter. Chili and Karen give in to their mutual attraction and take a badly injured Harry to a lunch meeting with Martin.

The humor of the book is sharp and the plot takes many surprising twists with a great deal of mayhem and violence. Some of the broader themes of the book including the relationship between life and art and the search for love pass easily under all the banter and crime. The character development, dialogue, and setting more than make up for the sometimes cumbersome plotting. I enjoyed this book and want to read more of Elmore Leonard.Get Shorty’ by Elmore Leonard could be arguably the author’s finest work. Not only is it very meta being a fictional story written about a fictional story about writing a fictional story, it has an amusing plot full of amusing and stereotypical classic characters. It is about various people, modeled probably on real people Leonard had met in Hollywood, who are wanting to break into the inner circle of those who make Hollywood movies, AND the novel Leonard wrote WAS made into a real movie for reals! After relieving Leo of the money in Vegas, Chili gambles it all away. At the casino, he finds a more interesting assignment. The casino is looking to collect from Harry Zimm, a horror film producer based in Los Angeles. Chili, interested in the movie business, heads for Los Angeles to make Zimm pay. Stim, Richard (August–September 2007). "Have I told you about my Elmore Leonard audiobook collection?" (PDF). AudiOpinion. AudioFile. pp.14–15. Archived (PDF) from the original on November 26, 2012. It's a bit unfair to Leonard that I've reviewed his narrator and not his book. This is the sequel to Get Shorty and is only interesting because Chili Palmer is the star. "Look at me..." I love when Chili says that! I try not to, but I see Chili as Travolta in my mind. The young, thin, beautiful Travolta, like he was in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, but with a great haircut and clothes. I may drool for a sec here. For his role as Chili Palmer, John Travolta received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film also received nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Mafioso Ernesto “Chili” Palmer is a character right out of mobster central casting except he is the real deal, that is, a character in ‘Get Shorty’ who is a fictional ‘real’ loan shark living in Florida. He can’t be completely part of the Mafia because he is Puerto Rican on his father’s side, but on his mother’s side he has uncles connected to a Brooklyn crew. These two novels were never my favorite Elmore Leonard books mainly because both novels were the 1st I sensed that my favorite contemporary author of crime fiction was working from someone else’s research material.Twenty-six of Leonard's novels and short stories have been adapted for the screen (19 as motion pictures and another seven as television programs). While some writers might have let this idea of a story unfolding and being pitched as a movie at the same time get too clever for its own good and been tempted to push the idea into complete nonsense, Leonard’s brevity and sharp plotting keep it grounded as a crime story with humor rather than letting it turn into some kind of meta-fiction writing exercise. As usual, you also get all the hallmarks of Leonard in his prime with great dialogue and memorable characters. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Leonard in turn had a very strong influence on a generation of crime writers that followed him. His obituary in USA Today named George Pelecanos, Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, and Laura Lippman.
