About this deal

One thing’s for sure: footrests are not essential. Footrests can be fun for the child and offer a place to rest their feet when they get up to speed. Resting their feet up and out of the way, the child can coast, corner, and slalom to their heart’s content. However, oversized and/or poorly positioned footrests can get in the way and obstruct the child’s stride. The Specialized Hotwalk is a well-built bike that would seemingly stand the test of time. Built with a durable aluminium frame and fork, spoked wheels, bearing headset and hubs, and a stem protector upfront for added safety, the Hotwalk is also well equipped. The solid foam tyres feel among the closest I’ve experienced to a pneumatic tyre’s grip and cushioning. However, what could be a great bike is let down by its hefty 4.22 kg weight and oversized footrests, which could obstruct some kids’ natural stride. IT'S MORE THAN JUST A BIKE - Toddlers have so much fun with their Buddy they don’t realise they are learning the fundamental skills needed for cycling. Balance, speed, stability, strength, and most of all confidence. Hopefully, if you have got this far, you will have noticed the importance we put on a bike’s life span. Key to this life span is the bike’s durability and serviceability. While undoubtedly costing more, bikes that resemble adults bikes and manufactured with recognisable bike parts are almost always longer-lasting and more serviceable than bikes treading the line between balance bike and toy. The adjustable seat is a great feature for growing toddlers. However, the maximum seat height is 15.7 inches, which most parents deem small for a 4-year-old and certainly not high enough for the advertised maximum age of 5.

YEARS OF FUN - The seat height and handlebar height can be adjusted to ‘evolve’ with your kids ensuring a best fit for 3 - 5 year old, or up to 66 lbs. The adjustable seat allows for a ride height 13.7” – 16.9”. Similar options: Strider 14x Sport (drivetrain attachment sold separately), SmarTrike Xtend (drivetrain attachment included). Specialized Hotwalk GOODBYE TRAINING WHEELS - Balance bikes allow children as young as 18 months to be prepared for cycling before stepping up to a pedal bike by three or four years old - without ever using training wheels.Balance bikes transcend the bike industry and traditional local bike shops. Walk into any toy, catalogue, or outdoor store, and you’re likely to find some form of balance bike. Likewise, many big brand names in the cycling industry feature at least one balance bike offering in their range. Alongside providing hours of endless fun, tricycles can be a great alternative to a balance bike, ideal for kids and toddlers who may be a little too young to start learning to ride a bike. ICONIC DUAL REAR WHEEL - The Y Velo Junior allows kids to practice with a stable double-width wheel before switching to a single wheel as they build confidence. We’ve completely refreshed our multi-award winning Y Velo Junior balance bikes with new features and vibrant colors, red and blue. The Yvolution Y Velo Junior balance bike provides a fun and easy introduction to bicycles for very young toddlers. It’s low minimum seatpost height, light weight, and innovative double rear wheel makes it superior to most balance bikes for learning to ride. Other updated details on the Banana Bike are the cushioned handlebars. They offer a secure grip that is comfortable for your toddler’s long rides. The handles are slightly textured, helping your little one hold on better.

Plastic bikes are generally less durable (there are exceptions) but they’re typically lighter as well, making them easier for the child to use. They’re also cheaper than most other materials. There are obvious concerns over a plastic bike’s environmental impact. That said, some plastic bikes are amongst the most durable on the market. More on this later. The saddle is also very hard and the footrest with a built-in foot brake seems an odd pairing. It seems unlikely a child will use a foot brake and the integrated brake means it cannot be used as a footrest. Even if older children do have the coordination to use a foot brake, moving the brake away from the hands, where it undoubtedly will be on their next bike, to the feet, will do little more than cause extra confusion when adapting to pedalling on a standard bike. Here’s how the Yvolution Y Velo compares to other balance bikes intended for toddlers starting at 18 months old. Bike

This balance bike is ideal for indoor play. We allowed it to be used for several weeks inside our house and didn’t notice any marking on our hardwood floors. Unfortunately, many manufacturers do not publish geometry charts for balance bikes. Of the bikes we have on test LittleBigBikes, Vitus and Specialized are notable exceptions in an otherwise geometry free zone. Weight The footrests on the Hotwalk are pretty big and sit exactly where a kid is likely to find their legs mid stride. While trikes, tricycles, and stabilisers provided most of us with a successful development path, the very nature of these supported, three and four-wheel designs means the child does not require the same balance to ride. Furthermore, the child can become reliant on the assistance these supported designs offer, potentially delaying their development.By opting for a balance bike, the child can focus on enjoying all the fun a bike can offer while also developing these essential skills.
