Musician and comedian Tim Minchin was chosen to write music and lyrics after Warchus saw his 2009 tour Ready for This? and persuaded during the encore song " White Wine in the Sun". It was also revealed comedian and musician Bill Bailey had been asked to write the songs, however turned the project down due to other works. [7] Coincidentally Minchin revealed that he had originally attempted to gain permission from the Dahl estate to stage a musical adaptation in the early 2000s when writing for a local youth theatre in Perth, Western Australia. [ citation needed] Productions [ edit ] Stratford-upon-Avon (2010–11) [ edit ] As well as kind Miss Honey, the bright lights among the meanness are story-loving librarian, Mrs. Phelps (Sindhu Vee), and Matilda’s newfound school friends. Filled with an overwhelming sense of justice, Matilda dares to take a stand for what is right and teach Trunchbull a lesson she won’t forget.Up-and-coming actress Alisha Weir takes on the titular role of Matilda Wormwood. This will be Weir’s first role in a children's movie, having previously acted in horror and thrillers such as the 2018 film Don’t Leave Home. Award-winning actress Emma Thompson ( Sense and Sensibility) will portray the ever-angry, glad to have never been a child, Miss Trunchbull. Based on what we have seen so far, Thompson is doing the character justice, sneering under her tight bun as she strikes fear into the children of Crunchem Hall, just as Pam Ferris did in the 1996 film adaptation. We hope we get to hear Thompson say the classic Trunchbull line, “the apple never rots far from the tree” before throwing bold little Matilda into the chokey. We can feel the nostalgic fear washing over us already!
