A book, a TV series, and most recently a play at the National Theatre, Andrea Levy’s novel is wide in its range, showing the viewpoints of four main characters over several years and three continents. To achieve what she does without the novel feeling over-long is a feat of genius in itself. In the wake of the overdue scandal, several books have offered up accounts of the Windrush generation. Matthews explores the stories of ordinary people who came to Britain from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971. Removing himself from the narrative as much as possible, Matthews has assembled a book that aims to replicate an oral storytelling tradition. I loved reading these accounts, which felt fresh and honest. A picture book story about the triumph of hope, love, and determination, Coming to England is the inspiring true story of Baroness Floella Benjamin: from Trinidad, to London as part of the Windrush generation, to the House of Lords.

Coming to England by Floella Benjamin - Pan Macmillan

Baroness Floella Benjamin is an actress, author, businesswoman, politician, writer of children’s books, TV presenter and singer. She was born in Trinidad but moved to the United Kingdom when she was 10 years old. She has talked about the racism that she experienced while growing up in the UK and how she found it hard to fit in. She is well-known as a presenter of children's TV programmes, such as Play School , Play Away and Fast Forward . Floella was the first person in this country to appear on TV with beads in her hair, but Floella didn't just appear in children's TV shows, she started making them as well - which means that as well as being on the TV herself, it became her job to help other people also appear on TV. Coming from Trinidad as a young girl the author was a bit dismayed to find England so different and life was not at all easy, nor were the people. She wonderedif she would ever feel welcome. However, with a loving family and preseverance she began to make a new life in a strange land Berry came to Britain from Jamaica in 1948. In the introduction to this collection of poems, he explains why he came to Britain and left a country he loved. Beginning in a City, 1948 in particular gives a strong impression of what Caribbean arrivals experienced in their first hours and days. The emigrant experience is often littered with contradictions, a major theme in my own novel, and Berry’s poems illustrate this perfectly. Floella wrote a book called Coming to England . What was the book about? (Floella's journey to England and her experiences after she arrived) When she was ten years old, Floella Benjamin, along with her older sister and two younger brothers, set sail from Trinidad to London, to be reunited with the rest of their family. Alone on a huge ship for two weeks, then tumbled into a cold and unfriendly London, coming to England wasn't at all what Floella had expected. When Floella left school she went to work in a bank, but what she really wanted to do was show business - acting and singing in front of an audience, either on TV or in a theatre. Floella went on to appear in many different shows, and when she was 27 years old Floella became one of the presenters of a children's TV show called Play School . It's one of the most popular children's TV programmes ever!

When Floella and her siblings follow her parents from Trinidad to Britain, they hope the Queen will be there to meet them – but their welcome is colder than expected. Gradually, they settle in, until one day Floella really does meet the Queen. Clear and direct, the book conveys some big, challenging ideas with assurance. Who is the main character in the story?
