Without going into too much, the tragic event was dealt with so brilliantly, it really showed the feelings across all characters in a sensitive and realistic way. The whole storyline was just written perfectly. I found this book to be emotional, I cried (a lot). I found it to be completely heart warming. The "journey" that Beth goes on despite there being a undercurrent of emotion and sadness, there is still some joy and laughter to be had. Turner has mixed in the humour into this story effortlessly without detracting from the foundation of the story. When her sister and brother in law are involved in a car crash Beth's life is turned upside down and she finds herself looking after her 14 year old neice Polly and three year old nephew Ted.

Written with such love and heart. Sarah has done an exceptional job of marrying her trademark comedy with deep and raw emotion. I loved it!'

An incredible debut novel, warm, uplifting and full of so much love. I couldn’t put it down. The pacing was perfect. I feel like everyone needs to read this! It’s definitely one of those books that will stay with me for a long long time. There was also a mysterious theme throughout that I enjoyed because it added a unique flair to the story✨ An unspeakable tragedy turns Beth’s life upside down, and she finds herself guardian to her teenage niece and toddler nephew, catapulted into an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents’ evenings and cuddly elephants. Having never been responsible for anyone – or anything – it’s not long before she feels seriously out of her depth. I work three days a week out of a co-working space in Exeter and I absolutely love it. Walking to and from work and having that separation between work and home has hugely benefited both my mental health and writing productivity. My co-workers are great company too (and often, there are biscuits!).The tone of the novel is very similar, at times dark and blunt but also filled with a matter-of-fact humour and moments of sheer joy. With a little help from her best friend Jory (purely platonic, of course…) and her lovely, lonely next-door neighbour, Albert, Beth is determined that this time she’s not giving up. It’s time to step up. Stepping Up is a heart-blasting triumph of a novel - wise, witty and wonderfully human. Isabelle Broom, author of THE GETAWAY
