Description

Fettercairn is a distillery who’s differences are more visually apparent than most. An open-topped mash tun (always fun to see in operation) produces a cloudy wort – this results in a more malty, nutty and spicy spirit style as opposed to a clear wort which centres on sweetness rather than cereal character. But, perhaps the biggest alteration from the norm comes with Fettercairn’s stills. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.

The new Fettercairn’s 12 year old is a pleasant surprise – it’s characterful with something to say – combining defined fruitiness with a malty core. I can’t help but wonder what this might be like at 43% or even 46% - I’m entirely sure that the mouthfeel and delivery of flavour would be more precise and defined, but nevertheless as it stands, this is a tasty and competent whisky. Unfettered Access digs into the philosophy and craft behind enlightened whisky making. Every month, we'll be distilling our thinking down into a digest of ideas, rare drops, new, exclusive offers, and glimpses behind the scenes - bringing you so close you can almost taste it. Thoughts: It’s actually a pleasant wee sipper of a dram but inevitably struggles to justify the price tag. There’s nothing radical going on but it’s a well executed example of a highland malt flavour profile. There’s some depth to the flavour profile and it feels like some decent casks have gone into it.Moreover, our perception of alcohol by volume percentages is twisted, as we think that 'more expensive bottles, with higher ABV percentages, are automatically better whiskies'.

However, the Gladstone family were hands-off owners (fun though it is to imagine ‘The People’s William’ getting to grips with distillation).Allowingthe distillery to be run by tenants, they retained ownership until 1923. A short period (mostly in mothballs) under the control of Ross & Coulter ended when Fettercairn was sold to Associated Scottish Distilleries (ASD, the Scotch arm of National Distillers of America which, at its height, owned Bruichladdich, Glenury Royal, Glen Esk, Glenlochy, Benromach and Strathdee). I could also start talking about deliberate acts to drive prices up by making whisky less available or 'market-exclusives', but that would muddle up the point I'm trying to make here. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Single malt whiskies are also more expensive than other whiskies. A single malt whisky is defined as "whisky made from malted barley, at a single distillery, aged for at least three years in either American oak or European (Spanish) oak casks, and bottled at a minimum ABV of 40%" (Glenfiddich.com).

Nose: Fettercairn yeastiness meets sweet sherry. Orange peels, juice and marmalade (there’s a lot of orange here) sit with golden syrup and dehydrated mango slices. Malty loaves and oven-baked buns are joined by dusty spices – cinnamon and allspice - whilst ripe berries (cranberry and strawberry), Eton Mess, stem ginger and crushed hazelnuts emphasise the influence of the PX finish. It’s sweet. Super sweet. As the Fettercairn12 is celebrated as the ' re-launch' of the brand, it might be interesting to read up on the distillery's public image. There’s some viscosity, but once it gets beyond the front of the mouth it feels underpowered and rather anaemic. The flavour delivery is better – orange sherbet, stone fruit preserves, dried mangos and a side bowl of stewed currants. Running throughout – characterful distillery notes of maltiness, porridge and yeasty bread - livened by white pepper and allspice. Resting is beneficial, offering an easier equilibrium between the spirit and the cask. It adds orange liqueurs and stem ginger whilst assimilating some of the sourer notes into the sweeter ones. Patience Padawan. It may not be a massive price jump but it is a jump nonetheless, and when you consider that Springbank and Ardbeg, the two nearest in price are bottled un-chill-filtered at 46%, while Fettercairn is diluted to 40%, the difference looks all the more dramatic. This cookie is set by Rubicon Project to control synchronization of user identification and exchange of user data between various ad services. Since Sir Alexander Ramsay established the distillery in 1824 we’ve been going to extraordinary lengths to capture the purest expression of our whisky’s character. Located in the foothills of Scotland’s Cairngorms, we don’t just use crystal clear mountain water as an ingredient, we drench our stills with it, cooling the copper so only the finest vapours rise. Official tasting notes: I preferred the standard 12 year old, the nose has some extra fruit and florality but the PX flavours don’t really shine through here just add a little extra to an already sweet and fruity malt. Score 73/100 Don’t take my word for it:
