She is fortunate to uncover a small rowboat submerged in the mud, and fixes it up so she can escape her town and find her parents. Our Floodland Display Banner will allow you to create a beautiful celebration or an effective working wall of the created work. Sedgwick's writing is as usual top-notch, literate and engaging, with characters who come to life on the page. I think children should read this because it has a plethora of adventure and amazing emotions go into the book. Ten-year-old Zoe Black was left behind on Norwich by accident when her parents escaped in the last supply ship to visit the island.

The main character was a very head strong, independent girl named Zoe who overcame many problems with mostly no adult figures to guide her. The names of the lands and dwelling places are taken from Jerusalem and Blake’s visionary imagination). It is an interesting premise and provides a glimpse of how rising waters could change life as we know it from a 10 year old girl's perspective. This book was the winner of the Branford Boase Award 2001 and marked the start of author Marcus Sedgwick’s multi-award-winning career. He is the author of several books, including Witch Hill and The Book of Dead Days, both of which were nominated for the Edgar Allan Poe Award.Set in the near future, global warming has caused the Earth's sea levels to rise and flood the coastal nations around the world. The most recent of these nominations rekindled a fascination with Poe that has borne fruit here in (in The Restless Dead, 2007) the form of "The Heart of Another" - inspired by Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart.

Set in an all too believable near future when many parts of England are submerged in water and people drift into gangs, divided due to the scarcity of resources, especially food. Sameer from England I love this book a lot as there is suspense, disastrous, strong plot and bunch of impressive characters who are full of courage to perform daring job for destiny. Zoe faces many challenges on her journey, particularly when stopping at a small "island" of an old cathedral that is overrun with wild children competing for space and resources.Floodland is a great book and my class produced many great pieces of work from the planning which they really enjoyed; I hope that your own class also enjoy it. I am using this book as the basis for a unit of work on placement and very excited to see how the children's work turns out. saw Marcus turn his attention to books for younger readers with the launch of a humorous new series: The Raven Mysteries, narrated by a grumpy raven, Edgar. There are 20 lessons planned in total , all with SMART Notebook screens, task sheets and header sheets to aid teaching and learning. Update 22/10/2020 - In response to many requests, I have converted the SMART Notebook screens to Powerpoint, so there is also a 123 page Powerpoint presentation included for the teaching sequence for those unable to access SMART Notebook files.

Set in a post-apocalyptic Britain after global warming has caused the seas to rise and turn the country into a series of Islands. Set on the east coast of England after the sea has risen and flooded much of East Anglia, Floodland tells the story of ten year old Zoe who has lost her parents in a confusing rescue mission from her home island of Norwich. The characters fall a bit flat, the plot trundles on with a lack of genuine tension and then it finishes feeling slightly rushed and convenient. However Zoe is a gutsy little girl and survives long enough to find her boat, make an ally and to escape in the middle of a battle and continue off to find her parents. Marcus also wrote with his brother Julian, and contributed to a short story collection with fellow YA authors.

After reading this book, I resolved myself to walk more or ride a bike more than riding cars to delay global warming, or save electricity to emit less carbon dioxide. An easy and quick read that is set in the near future where global warming causes sea levels to rise, which then causes floods. The language in the book is simple to read but very descriptive, using lots of metaphors and personification. I appreciate your kindness and I'm pleased to know that you have used a number of my schemes of work now, which I thank you for.

Zoe's family is last to leave their flooded town in England, and she is sadly separated from her parents as they get on the last boats. The doom that prevails is beautifully crafted as is the glimmer of hope that pulls us through the book with its magnetism. If it was to make people aware of the dangers of global warming it didn't touch on what had actually happened to bring about this world with any clarity. The class enjoyed the developing plot which moves quickly and includes several very anguished and dark moments which kept them engrossed in the story. Even though it takes so many years for an island to completely sink, I noticed that if we don't have any interest on global warming, things will go much faster than we expected. The idea behind this post apocalyptic world was fascinating and it wasn't too preachy seeing as it is a possible eventuality of global warming. After seeing Floodland used in a Year 5 class on my last placement I was pleasantly surprised at its many uses within the classroom and its cross curricular links. I would probably use it as a class read at the end of the day alongside another text, or as a discussion point especially in pshe or science. I chose to read Floodland as my year 6 class novel one term as I had seen it on so many year 6 reading lists and we were looking at environmental changes. But Eels Island, whose raggle-taggle inhabitants are dominated by the strange boy Dooby, is full of danger too.
