About this deal

We’ve written up comprehensive guides on Western Digital Red, Red Plus, and Red Pro as well as Seagate IronWolf vs. The Seagate IronWolf series is the company's solution for NAS setups, rivaling the Western Digital Red, but with faster speeds available. This particular series of drives comes in 1TB, 2TB, 3TB, 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, 10TB, 12TB, and 14TB versions. He's been involved in technology for more than a decade and knows a thing or two about the magic inside a PC chassis. SSDs in a NAS still isn't that common but there are obvious performance benefits if you're ok with the added cost.

Seagate IronWolf 12TB review: A hard drive made for NAS that

If on the other hand, most of what you’ll be storing is replaceable, you can get away with a single 12TB drive if you simply use standard methods to back up the irreplaceable data. Similar in performance to the Seagate professional drives, the WD Red Pro is a fine alternative with a little added value thanks to the up to 20TB capacity per drive. If you want to migrate the system to GPT, check the box of Use GUID Partition Table for the target disk. While the 12TB IronWolf falls a hair off the performance pace set by the 12TB BarraCuda Pro, it adds vibration detection (in the higher capacities) which Seagate says will ward off tracking issues when you pack two or more drives together in close proximity. There’s something about 12TB hard drives reading and writing at 250MBps that we just can’t get enough of.Seagate's Pro NAS drives all spin at 7,200 RPM and can handle high sustained and burst data transfer speeds.

If you need even more performance, go with Seagate IronWolf Pro, which will provide 7,200 RPM motors that can allow for up to 250MB/s of sustained data transfer, with bursts of around 6Gb/s. Backed by three-year limited warranties and a powerful brand in the storage market, WD drives are well known to be of top quality, and they last a long time. At 4TB capacity, the Pro drive offers an additional 40MB/s transfer speed (up to 220MB/s for the Ironwolf Pro vs 180MB/s for the Ironwolf) and double the cache. The IronWolf Pros all have the full feature set, with the exception of the 1TB model, which lacks vibration sensing.

Whether you're picking up one of the best NAS units from Synology, QNAP, ASUSTOR, or TerraMaster, good quality storage is an essential addition. If you migrate Windows that is installed on a GPT disk, ignore the above two points since there are no options. Our thoughts: When you’re ready to take your storage to the next level, we’d recommend checking out Seagate’s Exos hard drives.
