The first novella, The Age of Discretion, centers around the aging process and the end of careers of both husband and wife. What we have are three female voices, one louder and more strident than the other, but all disconcerting. Through her attempts to preserve things outside of her control, she demonstrates how she has internalised society’s poisonous ideas of what an elderly woman can be. The story follows the steady downward spiral of Monique, a middle-aged housewife, and her husband Maurice who, after revealing that he has been having an affair, asked that she be ok with it.

The Monologue” centers around an aging, rich woman sits at home, alone, and pours out her bitterness in a stream of consciousness diatribe. As she continues, she becomes more and more bitter with the world and everyone around her; she starts to alienate herself from her children, believe her friends reserve malcontent for her, and stops caring about her wellbeing.

the main message of this novel, which is that all the things that a woman is supposed to yearn for and covet: a husband, marriage, children, are not what achieves true happiness, is quite a radical message for 1967. Sería en vano buscar moralejas en estos relatos; proponer lecciones, no; mi intención ha sido totalmente diferente. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. De Beauvoir manages this masterful piece of prose illuminating the inner workings of the middle aged woman’s mind in a way only a pioneer of existentialism could.

When she hears his key in the lock “…there was that horrible taste in my mouth – the taste of dread. Maybe she was being humble, or maybe she just did not desire to fit into the box that the public had created for her. The way I approached a question, my habit of mind, the way I looked at things, what I took for granted - all this was myself and it did not seem to me that I could alter it.The adventure is which I have shared so passionately is not over--this adventure with its doubt, failure, the dreariness of no progress, then a glimpse of light, a hope, a hypothesis confirmed; and then after weeks and months of anxious perseverance, the intoxication of success. En el relato, Simone se centra en esta última forma de encarar la vejez, la de la mujer, un problema que va mucho más allá del miedo a enfrentarse a una muerte cada vez más cercana. It’s flying in the face of nature that my own brother my own mother should prefer my ex-husband to me. In the stories of “The Woman Destroyed”, published in 1967, she portrays the experiences of a group that has traditionally been ignored — especially at that time — , mature women.

Despite the brevity of the book, many readers, both female and male, leave long, thoughtful musings on how the book has resonated with them.if you ever need to strike some fear into the hearts of the men in your life, just start reading this in front of them. They are all in the tragic mode, I apologise if you saw the title of the collection and imagined something different from a not exactly cheerful but well observed depiction of unhappy states of mind. La femme rompue“, The Woman Destroyed, is written by one of the most controversial feminists, Simone de Beauvoir.
