SMILE books, which the school considers to be at the heart of all learning, are used by all year groups. I've seen and enjoyed several of Sarah Ruhl's plays, so I was excited to read her new memoir and learn more about her as a writer and a person. Smile is about Ruhl's birth of twins and subsequent onset of Bell's palsy, a condition where the face is partially paralyzed.

What is a “SMILE Curriculum”?

Although Smile is not a violent story, there are moments of teeth-related gore that might gross out some readers, especially when Raina falls and loses her front teeth and leaves a pool of blood on the asphalt. She explores the struggle of a body yearning to match its inner landscape, the pain of postpartum depression, the story of a marriage, being a playwright and working mom to three small children, and the desire for a resilient spiritual life in the face of illness.

Smile” is a young adult graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier. The story takes place in the sixth grade and follows a girl named Raina, who has an overbite that requires braces. When she falls while running after her friends, she breaks two teeth on her upper jaw. Her mother takes her to Dr. Golden for emergency surgery to fix them so they won’t fall out of her mouth completely. These graphic novels adapted by Raina Telgemeier, #1 New York Times bestselling and Eisner Award winning creator of Smile, are now available in full color! Following the success of the implementation of pupil SMILE books and to ensure clarity in understanding of the Curriculum for Wales, I decided to trial the SMILE book format myself, to record my planning. This helped me to develop greater depth of knowledge and understanding of the Four Purposes, Cross-Curricular Links, Pedagogical Principles and the What Matters Statements for each of the AoLEs.

These goals have been developed alongside the introduction of SMILE books, based on our SMILE five-a-day culture: Another great way to describe a smile is to use a simile or metaphor. People like Michael J Fox have helped so many for being open and honest and showing up. I admire him and Sarah both for opening up about their illnesses and so others with them won’t feel so alone and will have more information.From the artist of BSC Graphix comes this humorous coming-of-age true story about the dental drama that ensues after a trip-and-fall mishap. What was wonderful about this book is that she talks about different understandings that arose for her and then she goes off and writes a play or an essay about it. She was very open about her experiences and feelings during this time of her life. We all tend to focus on healing and getting well - but is that really what will bring us wellbeing in life? How do we reconcile disabilities, especially facial disabilities? Or respond to people who have them.? Or how do we respond to people who have face tics or unusual ways of acting that seem odd? In all honesty it was a hard book to read at times. Hard to Face your face and the ways Bell’s palsy or a facial injury has impacted your life. The pain that comes when people turn away from you because we see people as their face. And with bells palsey and facial injuries there is lots of that. Often people don’t know they do so. There is a shaming there.

Smiles can mean many things and take on different emotional significance. Here are some more good words to describe specific kinds of smiles. imperfection is a portal. Whereas perfection and symmetry create distance. Our culture values perfect pictures of ourselves, mirage, over and above authentic connection. But we meet one another through the imperfect particular of our bodies.
