About this deal

While Elizabeth, the host of Tall Chimneys during WWII, is trying her best to assist those in need, she finds herself caught up in a chain of secrets that could end her life. This novel is told from the points of view of Nancy whose stepbrother Martin has just been imprisoned for murdering her mother and stepfather (Martin's father). It’s not a genre I’d normally read, but I thoroughly enjoyed this side of the book, not only did it work extremely well alongside the part of the story set in the present day, but it was incredibly interesting and fascinating too.

My favorite part of this book was learning more about our MCs and how well their characters were developed. Finally, on a completely separate note – and a complete coincidence, this is the second book I’ve read this week which mentions a wartime British evacuation ship sunk by a U-boat torpedo – The SS City of Benares! The worry of impending bombing, worry of family fighting, of not being able to trust anyone in case they were a spy. It was after her father had died and her mum married Duncan, Martin’s father, that the relationship with her mother changed. It's not bad, it just doesn't actually have much meat on the bone in terms of a story, which is why I think we get POV two.

At first I was confused, then a bit annoyed because I wasn't necessarily in the mood for historical fiction, but in the end, the WWII storyline ended up being more fully fleshed out than the present day one.Jane Corry seems to make each chapter end on a thrilling moment which made me want to read on to find out what happens next. I was driven to Google ‘conchie’ and ‘grockle’ and was excited to discover ‘why’ I clean when I’m stressed. To escape the media and peering eyes she unlocked Tall Chimneys, her grandmother's home which was bequeathed to Nancy. I actually felt quite sorry for ranking it this low cos I really enjoyed the first few chapters, but overall, it’s just a boring read.

Like everyone else it seems, I was thoroughly surprised by the WWII historical fiction pieces taking up a solid 2/3 of this book. There’s an come clues, but they just read like facts, I didn’t mind reading them, but I wasn’t eager to find them out either. With all the characters, you confront an intriguing conundrum of who are they really , what is their truth and what cloak of disguise are they wearing? In addition, she is a regular contributor to The Daily Telegraph and speaks at literary festivals all over the world. Than in the now time we have Nancy who is going through a lot of trauma and facing trauma from her past as she goes back to tall chimneys the house that Elizabeth use to run.

I was left with a few questions towards the end but thankfully these were checked off in the form of a letter from the past that Nancy finds, giving the story it’s closing. The synopsis talks of a murder, a brother convicted of those murders and a woman who flees to escape the press. Elizabeth takes in two children and their teacher as refugees during the war, and events happen here that lead to more secrets being kept.
